A study published this month in the journal Vision offers a tidy, empirical explanation for something millions of people feel but can’t quite name. Led by Professor Paul Hibbard of the University of Stirling and Emeritus Professor Arnold Wilkins of the University of Essex, the international review found that certain visual patterns—stripes, high-contrast colors, flickering lights, cluttered shelves—can overload the brain, causing headaches, eye strain, nausea, and perceptual distortions. The researchers documented the effect across at least 11 clinical diagnoses and areas of neurodiversity.
The study’s examples are physical: supermarket aisles, open-plan offices, aggressively patterned wallpaper. And the commentary it has generated so far follows a predictable arc. Modern architecture is hostile. Minimalism was a mistake. We should all live in cottages with wavy glass windows.
But the most visually chaotic environment the average person encounters every day is not their living room. It is the six-inch rectangle of glass in their pocket.
The Supermarket Aisle Is a User Interface
The study describes “packed supermarket shelves” as a source of visual discomfort. Fair enough. But the average American now spends over seven hours a day looking at screens, and a growing share of that time is spent inside interfaces that make a Tesco aisle look like a Zen garden. Social media feeds are engineered for maximum visual interruption: autoplay video, animated display ads, notification badges, countdown timers, bold CTAs in clashing colors, infinite scroll that never resolves into a stable image. If striped wallpaper can trigger measurable physiological stress, what is a TikTok feed doing?
The researchers propose that the brain expends more energy than normal to process certain artificial visual patterns, and that this metabolic overload is what produces discomfort. The mechanism hasn’t been fully tested yet, but the hypothesis maps almost too neatly onto digital life. Every scroll delivers a new high-contrast composition. Every refresh reshuffles the visual field. The brain never gets to rest on a stable image—because a stable image is bad for engagement.
One product designer at a major social platform put it plainly in a Slack channel reviewed by this columnist: “We A/B tested a calmer, lower-contrast feed layout last year. Time-on-platform dropped 11%. The calmer version never shipped.”
Engagement Is the Enemy of Comfort
This is the tension the Stirling study illuminates without meaning to. The design principles that dominate our most-trafficked digital spaces are not neutral. They are optimized for a single metric—sustained attention—and the tools that sustain attention are the very same visual stimuli the researchers identify as discomfort-inducing: high contrast, rapid change, unpredictable pattern, clutter.
Apple and Google have spent the better part of a decade pushing their operating systems toward visual calm. iOS’s design language has grown progressively quieter. Dark mode, reduced motion, focus filters, grayscale options—these are not just aesthetic preferences. They are accommodations for a nervous system that is being pummeled. The fact that the world’s two largest mobile platforms now ship with accessibility features that effectively undo the visual aggression of third-party apps is an admission that something has gone wrong at the OS level.
But the platforms where people actually spend their time—the social networks, the short-video apps, the ad-supported content mills—have no incentive to follow suit. Their revenue depends on the opposite.
A Measurable Harm
If visual discomfort has a physiological basis—if it can be linked to specific patterns, measured, and predicted—then it stops being a matter of taste and starts looking like a harm. The Stirling study doesn’t go there; it’s a review of mechanisms, not a policy brief. But the implication is hard to miss. We regulate noise pollution. We regulate air quality. We have workplace standards for lighting and ergonomics. We do not, at present, regulate the visual environment of a software interface, even though hundreds of millions of people are immersed in one for most of their waking hours.
That may change. The study gives future litigants and regulators a foothold: a peer-reviewed, cross-institutional finding that certain visual patterns cause measurable discomfort, and that the discomfort is not merely subjective. It is physiological. It can be studied. It can, presumably, be designed against.
The irony is that the physical spaces the study examines—the open-plan offices, the aggressively lit retail environments—are increasingly optional. Remote work and e-commerce have given millions of people an escape hatch from fluorescent-lit discomfort. But the digital spaces that replaced them are, if anything, worse. You can leave the supermarket. You cannot easily leave the internet.
None of this is an argument for digital pastoralism. The answer is not to replace every app with a beige text interface. But the Stirling study is a reminder that the visual environment is an environment—one that acts on the body whether or not we are paying attention to it. The people who design the spaces where we now spend half our lives should probably start acting like it.
