On July 3, software developer Mike Bowler published a blog post that has since rocketed to the top of Hacker News, accumulating over 676 points and nearly 400 comments in less than a day. The thesis — captured in the title “The bottleneck might be the air in the room” — is simple. Bowler bought a portable CO2 monitor, brought it into meetings, and watched the numbers climb past 2,000 parts per million, well into territory that peer-reviewed research associates with measurable cognitive decline. His prescription: before you conclude your team can’t think strategically, crack a window. A CO2 monitor costs less than an hour of your time.
It is a crisp, empirically grounded, and immediately actionable argument. It is also, I suspect, deeply comforting to a certain kind of knowledge worker — because it locates the problem in the air, where no one has to take responsibility for it.
The 2,143 ppm Red Herring
There is no serious dispute about the underlying science. A well-known 2015 study from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that participants exposed to CO2 concentrations of 1,400 ppm scored 50% lower on cognitive function tests than those in environments at 550 ppm. At 2,500 ppm, the drop was steeper still. These are real numbers, and they have been confirmed in subsequent work. Bowler is not wrong about the chemistry.
But here is what the commentariat rushing to order Aranet4 monitors on Amazon is not asking: if CO2 buildup is so reliably catastrophic, why do some organizations manage to make good decisions in exactly the same stale-air conference rooms where other organizations flounder for years? The air in the boardroom of a well-run company and the air in the boardroom of a dysfunctional one have identical CO2 concentrations. Only one ships product.
The variable Bowler’s monitor cannot measure is whether anyone in the room is empowered to say no.
The Permission Structure Problem
Most bad meetings are not bad because the participants are too oxygen-deprived to think clearly. They are bad because the actual decision has already been made elsewhere — in a pre-meeting, in a Slack DM, in someone’s head — and the formal gathering is a theater of alignment. Attendees know this. They perform engagement while mentally cataloguing the work piling up back at their desks. The cognitive impairment is real, but it is not metabolic. It is structural.
“We had a CO2 monitor in our office for six months,” a product manager at a mid-size fintech company told me over Slack. “The numbers were fine. We still spent every planning meeting debating whether the VP liked the font on slide seven.”
This is the thing the CO2-as-bottleneck thesis skates past: the most cognitively demanding thing most workers do in meetings is not analyze data or weigh tradeoffs. It is reading the room — calculating who has power, who is protecting what turf, which objections can be voiced and which cannot. That kind of cognitive load does not go away when the windows open.
What the Monitor Actually Measures
There is a subtler problem with the CO2 diagnosis, which is that it mistakes correlation for cause in exactly the way the organizations it aims to help are prone to do. A room with 2,100 ppm of CO2 is also a room that has been sealed shut for an hour with too many people in it. That room is not just carbon-dioxide-rich; it is a room where no one has thought to open a door, where the meeting has run long, and where the agenda has ballooned to include seven people who do not need to be there.
The CO2 reading is downstream of the same dysfunction it is being asked to explain. Fix the meeting design — cut the attendee list, cap the duration, assign a decider — and the CO2 problem often solves itself, because fewer people are sitting in a sealed box for ninety minutes.
The Harder Variable
Bowler’s post closes with an appeal to cheap empiricism: measure the air, fix the air, see what happens. It is a hacker’s instinct, and I mean that as a genuine compliment. The impulse to instrument the world rather than guess about it is the best part of engineering culture.
But some variables are harder to instrument than CO2. Whether the person running the meeting can actually make the call. Whether the organization punishes dissent or rewards it. Whether the quietest person in the room is quiet because of carbon dioxide or because they learned last quarter that speaking up gets their project defunded.
None of these fit on an Aranet4 display. They are, however, the air most teams are actually suffocating in. Open a window, by all means. But maybe also open the invitation list and remove the six people who are only there to witness the outcome. The cognitive boost from 800 ppm of CO2 is real. So is the cognitive boost from not attending a meeting at all.
